Zimbabwean poet, author, environmentalist, and researcher Martin Mlilo has emphasised the importance of teaching young children—especially girls—about traditional kitchen wares and indigenous dishes as a vital way of preserving culture and understanding how yesteryear Ndebele people lived.

Martin Mlilo highlighted that traditional kitchen practices are not just about food preparation, but are an essential part of cultural education, identity formation, and intergenerational knowledge transfer. By learning about these practices at a young age, children gain deeper insight into Ndebele values, history, and ways of life.

He made these remarks on the sidelines of the first day of the King Mzilikazi Commemorations, a day dedicated to teaching school children about the history, leadership, and legacy of King Mzilikazi. The commemorations serve as an important platform for cultural education, heritage preservation, and historical awareness among younger generations.

Martin Mlilo’s work continues to align closely with the mission of iSintu saMahlabezulu, which seeks to preserve, promote, and celebrate Ndebele language, culture, and heritage through education, storytelling, and community engagement.
