Our Impact

Since its establishment, iSintu saMahlabezulu has been strengthening cultural identity, unity, and heritage education for the AmaNdebele (aMahlabezulu) community in the UK, with a strong focus on intergenerational learning and community wellbeing.

AmaMahlabezulu Cultural Heritage Gathering

June 2025 | Manchester

In June 2025, iSintu saMahlabezulu successfully delivered its Annual Cultural Heritage Gathering in Manchester, bringing together approximately 450 community members, including families, elders, young people, and six contributing cultural artists.

Impact Achieved

The gathering delivered clear cultural, social, and educational outcomes:

  • Provided a safe, inclusive, and culturally grounded space for intergenerational learning and cultural expression

  • Enabled elders and cultural leaders to share traditional knowledge, leadership structures, governance practices, and cultural values

  • Strengthened confidence, pride, and sense of belonging, particularly among young people growing up in the diaspora

  • Delivered heritage education through traditional music, storytelling, ceremonial practice, leadership protocols, and food

  • Increased visibility and understanding of AmaNdebele culture within the wider Manchester community

  •

Building Confidence, Identity & Belonging

Participants reported a renewed sense of cultural connection and community pride. Parents and elders highlighted the importance of creating regular, lived opportunities for young people to learn their language, customs, and history in meaningful, practical ways.

For many young people, the gathering reinforced positive identity, belonging, and self-confidence within both their cultural community and wider society.

Growing Capacity for the Future

This Annual Gathering marked a key milestone in iSintu saMahlabezulu’s organisational development, demonstrating our ability to:

  • Plan and deliver large-scale, well-organised community events

  • Work collaboratively with volunteers, elders, and cultural practitioners

  • Manage activities safely, responsibly, and with cultural integrity

Building on this foundation, iSintu saMahlabezulu will continue delivering annual cultural gatherings, alongside regular heritage education and community wellbeing activities that promote social cohesion, positive identity, and cross-generational connection.

Evidence of Impact

Our impact is evidenced through:

  • Community-led cultural events and gatherings, including heritage celebrations and commemorations attended by community members and families.

  • Participation and engagement, with elders, adults, and young people actively involved in cultural learning and intergenerational exchange.

  • Community feedback and reflection, showing increased cultural pride, connection, and understanding of AmaNdebele heritage.

We continue to strengthen our approach by gathering attendance records, photographs, and participant reflections to help inform future activities and demonstrate community benefit.
